The Cordillera Huayhuash is the most important mountain in the region, along with the spectacular Nevado Yerupjá (6,634 m), the second highest mountain in Peru. Its 30 km of mountain range includes six peaks exceeding 6,000 m. To experience Huayhuash means admiring Siulá Grande (6,344 m), a legendary mountain in the Peruvian Andes; to hike to the source of the Marañón River, a major tributary of the Amazon River; to experience sensations of solitude among lagoons and passes reaching 5,000 m, as depicted in the book and film "Touching the Void" by Joe Simpson.
